Poem

THE SKY CONTROLS US

When gravity reversed

I was walking down Aylmer

in the McGill Ghetto

peanut butter and tea in hand

We all fell up

and I lost my purchases

as I caught a tree

I pulled myself along its branches

into the nearest house

It was all tinkling jagged shards

and broken tables

but at least I could stand

I’ve been here

for days now

Whoever lived here

has not returned

Yesterday I heard a neighbor

begging the sky for mercy

like it was

a hungry beast

I have started to imagine

that it is

In my dreams the sky

is a blue dragon–

beautiful but deaf, blind,

and starving.

Weirdly, I find myself

well suited to this

apocalyptic life.

It calms me somehow,

this chaos I can comprehend.
